The defense secretary also suggested in his testimony to a House panel that the use of the National Guard for homeland defense would expand under President Trump.
The troop mobilization indicates that President Trump is breaking with recent presidents’ practice of limiting deployments along the U.S.-Mexico border mostly to small numbers of active-duty soldiers and reservists.
“Whatever is needed at the border will be provided,” Pete Hegseth, the new defense secretary, told reporters.
